Looe Valley Walking Festival 2009

Five days of walking in and around the Looe Valley and beyond, including walks on Bodmin Moor, the South West Coast Path and the Looe Valley itself.

September 20th

Wildlife of the Valleys

Start: Platform 3, Liskeard Station 9.45am, Finish 3pm

As part of the National Community Rail Festival, local nature lover Dave Winter will lead a walk taking in both river valleys with a stop at Duloe for a buffet lunch.  Bring binoculars so you don’t miss anything!

Length of walk. 5 miles

Historical Pub Crawl

Start: Looe Station 4pm, Finish 6pm

Rounding off the National Community Rail Festival, join local guide and author Mark Camp on a tour of the pubs and inns of East Looe. Hear how they started out and developed as the port became more prosperous only to embrace tourism once passengers started visiting the town by train in the early 20th century.

September 21st

The End of the Line

Start: Minions village, outside shop 10am, Finish 3pm

Iain Rowe has built up a reputation for his industrial walks, this year he takes us up onto the moors following the route of the mineral line that ran north from Minions. Passing through the ruined mines just beyond the village the walk will head out to the wild landscape of Twelve Men’s Moor, an area where man has left his mark for over 5,000 years.

September 22nd

A Different Valley, a Different Coastline

Start: Bus Stop outside Looe Health Centre 10.20am, Finish 3.30pm

Catching the bus to Hessenford, this walk follows the Seaton River down to the sea before joining the South West Coast Path to return to Looe. Festival organiser Mark Camp leads this walk on what is uncharted festival territory.

Length of walk. 6 miles, bring a packed lunch and drink.

September 23rd

The Hills and Holes of Herodsfoot

Start: Bus Stop outside Health Centre 9.45am, Finish 3.45pm

Descending deep into the West Looe Valley this walk offers an in-depth look at the village of Herodsfoot, once an important industrial area with silver mines and gunpowder mills. Today all is quiet, apart from the cry of the buzzard circling overhead.

Length approx 6 miles, bring a packed lunch and drink.

September 24th

Cross County, Circles and Cider

Start: Bus Stop opposite Looe Health Centre 10.40am, Finish 4.15pm

Catching the bus to the village of Pelynt we drop down into the West Looe Valley before climbing back out and up to Duloe. Here we will visit the church, stone circle and Cornish Orchards, where we can refresh ourselves with award winning apple juice or cider before heading downhill into the East Looe Valley to catch the train back to Looe. Guide Mark Camp.

Length 5 miles, bring a packed lunch and drink.
